Tuberculosis
What is Tuberculosis?
Tuberculosis (TB) is an infection caused by bacteria (Mycobacterium tuberculosis) that can infect any part of the body, but usually attacks the lungs.
Though TB is rare in Wisconsin, it can be spread to others by coughing, sneezing, or speaking, making it a threat to public health.
Together with the Wisconsin TB Program, De Pere Health Department helps identify people at risk for TB, provides education in the community and to providers, and facilitates treatment for people who have latent TB infection and active TB disease to reduce rates of illness.

- A positive TB skin test (Tuberculin Skin Test/TST) or TB blood test (IGRA: QuantiFERON-TB Gold or T-SPOT) may indicate a person has been exposed to or is infected with TB bacteria. It CANNOT tell whether the person has latent TB infection, active TB disease, or has responded to LTBI/TB treatment. Additional evaluation and testing is needed.
